Alabama currently ranks in the lower third of U.S. states for AI readiness, with a composite score of 21.3. However, the state’s tech sector output has grown by 50% since 2018 and is expected to double by 2030. AI is already transforming key industries in Alabama, including aerospace, healthcare, maritime logistics, agriculture, and tourism. Companies implementing AI in pilot programs have reported efficiency gains between 10-30%.

The presentation highlighted the rise of AI-powered tools such as neural networks, transformers, and large language models, which are increasingly applied in business and research. Southern Alabama, in particular, has significant potential for AI adoption, with industry growth opportunities in sectors like shipping and healthcare. Mobile and Baldwin counties are emerging as AI hubs, supported by tech incubators like the Innovation Portal and Hatch, as well as research initiatives at the University of South Alabama.

Gray also addressed the evolving job landscape, noting that while AI could displace millions of jobs globally, it is projected to create even more opportunities—an estimated 12 million net new jobs by 2030. To prepare for this shift, he underscored the need for AI-focused workforce development, including K-12 coding education, AI training programs at Coastal Alabama Community College, and industry-sponsored internships.

The luncheon concluded with a call to action for Baldwin County’s business leaders to embrace AI, integrate it into economic planning, and support workforce education initiatives. By fostering AI innovation and education, Southern Alabama can position itself as a leader in this transformative technology.
